On October 1, 1964, the Tokaido ShinkansenTokaido Shinkansen opened for business. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was conducted by Reisuke IshidaIshida, R., JNR president at the time. His predecessor SogoSogo, S., who had led the way in bringing the Shinkansen to fruition, had resigned 15 months earlier because the budget for the Shinkansen construction had doubled from its original amount. SogoSogo, S. accepted responsibility for failing to stay within the budget.
