Overhead electric catenary wires that power trolleybuses and trams have existed since the 1880s. Today, San Francisco has 273 trolleybuses and 200 tramcars riding the wires.

    In Southern California, the ports of Los Angeles and San Pedro would like to replace over 16,000 diesel drayage (short-haul) trucks that carry containers from ships to warehouses 25 miles or more inland with new trucks that would use an electric catenary truck route.

    This chapter takes a look at costs, pilot projects, and alternative propulsion systems such as hydrogen fuel cells or batteries for when a catenary truck gets off the wires to make deliveries and pick-up new cargo.
