The infrastructure of developing countries and developed countries mainly focuses on roadways that connect cities and towns. The roadways in India are broadly classified as Express highways, National highways, state highways and other roadways. The number of accidents in roadways are increasing eventhough the infrastructure of roadways are improved. This is due to the lack of control in speed by the drivers. The drivers are not following the speed limits of the respective highways which is determined by the authorities. This paper presents a smart speed control system for vehicles based on internet of things. The system is to be installed in all the vehicles. Based on the global positioning system coordinates, the speed of the vehicles is automatically optimized gradually so that the drivers follow the speed limit of the respective highways. In case of emergency, this system also sends request to the authorities for increasing the vehicle speed.
