The state of heavy-haul train in operation is variable because of some constraints, such as train weight, marshaling length, neutral section and so on; therefore, it is difficult for drivers to ensure the safety of train. To solve this problem, a design method of fuzzy controller is proposed to control the operation of heavy-haul train on gentle section. This method focuses on the structural characteristics of heavy-haul train and studies the influence of neutral section and line condition on train speed. Then, based on control theories and on-site driver’s experience, a fuzzy PID controller is designed to better adapt to the changes of system parameters during train operation. Finally, the performance of controller is verified by simulation based on the actual line data and train marshaling information. The results prove that the controller is feasible and can control the heavy-haul train to run more securely and placidly.
