Refractive index is an important factor that will affect the performance of gradient-index optical fibers, and the refractive index of a gradient-index optical fiber is usually measured by the preform of it. However, the size of a gradient-index optical fiber preform is large, while the sample size that can fit into the index measuring instruments is limited. Therefore, the refractive index distribution of a fiber preform is usually determined in a destructive way. A small measurement sample should be cut off from the preform, which may damage the whole preform. Here, we proposed a nondestructive refractive index measuring method based on computational light-in-flight imaging, and we demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method by measuring the refractive index of curved optical fibers and a gradient-index medium.
