This paper reviews all forms of dynamic braking and their interactions with friction brake. The paper then goes on to look at the advantages of the schemes employed to date. Consequently, other possibilities are reviewed and considered for a variety of applications. In considering the way forward the paper reflects on the increasing use of unit trains and all data highways.
