Molded phenolic disc brake pistons were released as an alternate to the chrome plated steel piston on 1975 Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, and Imperials. This unique use of a non-metallic thermoset material is the result of a joint Chrysler/Durez material and design development program. The combined efforts of the material supplier, molder and end user made it possible to screen and formulate a material, establish a design, and select a process that would produce pistons to meet disc brake funtional requirements.This paper describes how this was achieved with material and design.
