To fully realize the potential of hybrid-electric vehicle technologies requires a complete vehicle systems approach for component selection and optimization over typical driving situations. The control problems that arise in connection with hybrid powertrains are significant, and pose additional challenges to powertrain control engineers. The principal aim of this paper is to propose a framework for the analysis and design of optimum hybrid vehicles. The application of the principles described in the paper is demonstrated using the design of a hybrid-electric sport-utility vehicle as a case study.
