Hybrid-electric powertrains (108) for aircraft (100) are disclosed herein. An example hybrid-electric powertrain (108) includes a gas turbine propulsion engine (110) including a first propulsor (202) and a gas turbine engine (200) to drive the first propulsor (202) to produce thrust, a generator (242) operably coupled to a drive shaft (204) of the gas turbine engine (200), and an electric propulsion unit (114) including a second propulsor (232) and an electric motor (230) to drive the second propulsor (232) to produce thrust. During a first mode of operation, the gas turbine propulsion engine (110) and the electric propulsion unit (114) are activated to produce thrust, and the generator (242) is driven by the gas turbine engine (200) to produce electrical power to power the electric propulsion unit (114). During a second mode of operation, the gas turbine propulsion engine (110) is activated to produce thrust and the electric propulsion unit (114) is deactivated.
