Structural optimization techniques using Design Sensitivity Analysis (DSA) are seen to be very efficient in order to improve static, dynamic or acoustic behaviour of a vehicle. The paper includes the derivation of both static and dynamic criteria sensitivity such as displacement, stress, natural frequency or mode shape with respect to design variables such as material or geometrical properties. DSA is performed using State Space method and is integrated into a non linear mathematical programming method for large scale optimization. The second part of the paper is devoted to numerical examples covering identification of parameters using experimental results, several examples of DSA, dynamic and acoustic optimization procedures and shape optimization subject to dynamic and acoustic constraints.
