A packaged cogeneration system fueled by natural gas and rated at 60 kW electrical output and 440,000 Btu/hr thermal output was developed using an automotive engine prime mover. Adaptation of the low-cost, compact automotive engine for reliable and continuous operation on natural gas was a major factor in achieving the design and cost goals for a product serving the small-scale cogeneration market. This paper describes the system and discusses the product design rationale and engine development.
