This paper describes the concept, design and development of a new highly flexible diagnostic system for diesel powered equipment. An application involving an Ingersoll-Rand compressor and electrical generator for aircraft ground support is reviewed. The diagnostic system consists of three microprocessor based modules that communicate with each other. These modules provide the function of performance monitoring, data logging, fault diagnostics, simulation, calibration and operator interface.
