The purpose of this paper is to describe the challenges and limitations involved in the design and manufacture of rubber tired, diesel powered, underground mining equipment, particularly in the areas where they differ from surface equipment. It will also outline and describe the environment and usage of this equipment underground in both Metallic (hardrock) and non-metallic (coal) mines. Specifically, the two main areas that will be covered are:THE UNDERGROUND CONFINEMENTS FOR DESIGN AND OPERATIONMESA REGULATIONS FOR DIESEL EXHAUST EMISSIONS UNDERGROUND
