Since the establishment of digital audio discs (CDs) in the consumer market place, consumers have become aware of high quality digital audio sound. The R-DAT standardization activities of the authors group opened a new era of high performance capabilities. In this paper the authors describe the realization of an R-DAT player suitable for automotive use.The paper describes the various features of this new R-DAT player technology such as rapid music search (200 times speed), DIN sized (180 mm W + 50 mm H × 165 mm D), two playback sampling frequencies (44.1 and 48 kHz), low profile mechanism (35 mm high), and high density surface mount components on both sides of the circuit board.
