American Airlines evaluated the Litton LTN-51E prototype inertial navigation system from July 1967 to January 1968 in the Transpacific Astrojet environment. Over 170 flights totalling more than 1000 navigation hours were flown. The system demonstrated the requisite accuracy, reliability, and operational suitability for airline operation. An accuracy of 1.2 n. mile/hr (CEP) was attained for flights 47–169, and the overall accuracy demonstrated in the program was 1.5 n. mile/hr (CEP).The flight evaluation of this prototype system was found to be extremely valuable for identifying and correcting system problems prior to production delivery.
