In order to develop excellent winter tires, the friction mechanisms of a tire on ice-covered highway or express-way must be investigated. This paper presents a theoretical model for the kinetic friction coefficient of tire on ice based on three governing equations of mechanics and theory of frictional heating. The model is set up for two shapes of contact patch named elliptic and rectangular interface respectively, and it gives better agreement between the calculated and test results than the published model. How to determine the value of heat transfer into the tire is discussed in this paper.
