Gas turbine engines are being used or will be used in a number of U. S. Navy “unconventional craft.” The characteristics inherent in the gas turbine make many of these craft feasible. The U. S. Navy approach to the problem of assuring satisfactory operation of gas turbine engines in the environment in which they will operate in these craft is reviewed. A number of gas turbine installations are discussed, and the major Bureau of Ships' development effort in the field of gas turbines is outlined.
