This paper discusses the problem of reliability in hydraulic systems. Tools such as mathematical statistical analysis, reliability block diagrams, and failure-effect analysis cannot in themselves provide reliable systems or components. Reliability must be inherent in the design. The effect of such factors as contamination, design complexity, testing, and maintenance are considered.
