The continuous casting process and the major reasons for the sudden interest by the steel industry are briefly discussed, as well as limitations in type of steel produced. Factors in this process of importance to material characteristics, including soundness, uniformity, effect of hot work, and center porosity are considered from the viewpoint of the materials engineer. A research program to answer some questions is outlined.
