Community noise characteristics of present subsonic jet aircraft have resulted in stringent acoustical objectives for the supersonic transport. Achievement of the 108 PNdB take-off objective has constituted a significant portion of the total design effort on the SST. It is possible to provide an airplane that produces less community noise than the present subsonic jets by the use of engines with airflows of three to four times that of existing subsonic jet engines - but with low velocities resulting in low jet noise - and by providing the aircraft with outstanding take-off and climb-out performance. Properly planned ground maneuvers and available suppression equipment will result in satisfactory noise levels during ground operations and maintenance runups.
