The Pratt & Whitney Aircraft JT9D engine is described with respect to the ways in which it has been designed to meet the requirements of airline operators. Chief emphasis is placed on the engine's simplicity of construction, provisions for condition monitoring, and capability for maintenance, along with its improved noise and smoke emission characteristics.
