Background information and criteria regarding the many aspects to be considered in general fastener applications are reviewed to help determine the best combination of design and assembly parameters. To enable designers to better understand the possible variables in fastener usage, this discussion explains the reasons for such variables, how they affect the strength of the joint and what selections can be made to insure economic results.Test methods and test results in evaluating a joint assembly are reviewed as well as factors involved in different tightening methods and problems arising from improper fastener usage.
