Fatigue failures in fasteners can lead to catastrophic failures of engines and other automotive components yet there is no single established predictive model in the industry This paper provides an overview of fastener fatigue principles including processing, testing, predictive models and design. Processing of fasteners plays a large role in fastener fatigue performance because of the large stress concentration in the threads and in the under head fillet. This section will include not only the critical processing methods, but also some quality control checks that can be used to ensure parts are being manufactured correctly. Determination of the endurance limit by experimental fatigue testing relies heavily on special statistical methods since a part either fails or does not fail under a specific loading condition. Furthermore, a different test result may occur with the next apparently identical part. Both the ASTM and staircase methods for determining the endurance limit will be covered, as the approaches are much different. Test conditions also vary for different applications. The last topic covered in this section addresses the difference between application developmental testing for QC purposes. While most engineers are trained in how to develop and use the Goodman diagram for predicting fatigue performance, some improvement is needed to apply this to fasteners. This section covers the modified Goodman diagram, the predictive models of Yoshimoto, and correlations in VDI 2230. The fatigue performance of bolted joints is more complicated than that of the fasteners themselves. This paper concludes with an outline of bolted joint design principles focusing on the effect of preload and holt design on the fatigue performance of the joint.
