The Minuteman Weapon System has met all its system reliability requirements to date. The original Minuteman concept presented a severe challenge in both a management and a technical sense. Management policies and technical decisions which were made at the beginning of the program laid the cornerstone for later implementation of a successful reliability program. Implementation of the reliability program consisted of adapting the best features of the state of the art as then known to the Minuteman requirements and adding innovations as needed to fill special Minuteman needs. This paper describes the management policies established, the technical decisions made, and the reliability program which was implemented.
