If operating restrictions are to be avoided in V/STOL service, features and capabilities beyond conventional landing gear requirements are necessary. Challenges imposed by longer strokes, drift landings, and take-offs without forward velocity, high ground flotation, and rough field operation must be met without exceeding exceptionally low weight targets. The general approach to the design of the XC-142A, a V/STOL transport, landing gear system is described. Certain design features resulting from V/STOL requirements are described in detail.
