This paper presents an analysis of various energy-absorbing units for automotive bumper applications. It also introduces several general criteria concerning their design and performance to provide an analytical outline of the parameters involved. An example case of head-on impact between two vehicles with mass ratio of 1:2 reveals the effect of heavy vehicle absorber design upon lighter vehicle damageability.
