The paper shows how the prediction of bearing operating temperature becomes close to measurements when heat conduction into the shaft is taken into account. At high speed allowance has to be made for additional friction due to direct contact of asperities through thin oil films. The paper also discusses the effect of crankshaft and crankcase stiffness on main bearing performance.
