Pilots generally are big fans of the automated cockpits found in the latest technology aircraft. Many of the systems designed represent significant improvements. However, there is a significant learning process involved both for the air carriers and for their pilots. While the responsibility of the pilot to fly safely remains unchanged, several new skills are required to fly advanced technology or glass cockpit airplanes. Topics such as training, communication and information management, mode and system awareness, and maintenance of manual flying skills all pose special challenges.
