Some of the flow problems that have been encountered while operating centrifugal compressor impellers with transonic inlet and discharge Mach numbers are described. Qualitative analyses of these problems, modifications used to reduce the adverse effects of transonic flow phenomena, and the comparative results of testing compressors with and without these modifications are presented.
