The paper outlines a program of cooperation by engineering organizations to improve engineers' access to technical information. The program of Engineers Joint Council initiated in 1962 addressed itself to the fundamentals of information transfer in the written media, specifically to develop a thesaurus for controlling indexing vocabularies and to encourage greater participation by authors and editors in indexing technical papers, at the time of publication.Specific topics discussed are the rationale for the EJC approach to handling information, the Thesaurus and its applications, primary publications, review practices, source indexing, education in information handling, pilot projects, and the steps taken toward establishing a coordinated engineering information system for the technical community.
