This paper discusses interrelated technical and economic factors that will influence the decisions on development, production, and marketing of electric vehicles. It is suggested that the attractiveness of electrics for a wide range of limited-use purposes, and their small economies of scale in production and marketing will prove attractive to small and medium size firms who wish to enter the automobile industry. The paper also describes the use of input-output analysis as a technique for assessing the impact of an electric car innovation on resource use and industrial structure.
