Following successful field trials of prototype vehicles, production programmes for traffic-compatible electric delivery vehicles are currently being implemented by major UK vehicle manufacturers. The trials have established that there is substantial market potential for high-speed electric delivery, and detailed cost studies, based on practical experience, indicate that such vehicles are capable of competing directly with i.c. engined vehicles, in terms of wholelife ownership costs. This paper reviews the various factors whic influence lifetime costs, and describes some of the steps being taken to create a successful, viable industry for traffic-compatible electric road vehicles in the UK.
