The results of both research and practical experience that have provided a working basis for the safe storage and handling of liquid hydrogen is reviewed. The hazards involved in the use of liquid hydrogen, including those related to both its cryogenic characteristics and its reactivity with air, are discussed. General recommendations are made as to precautionary measures which should be considered in the design and operation of liquid hydrogen facilities.
