The functional requirements of an automotive engine coolant are outlined, and the established methods of evaluating antifreeze performance characteristics are reviewed. An engine-dynamometer test procedure which provides improved discernment of coolant performance is described. Interpretation of data is discussed and related to field service conditions. Representative data are presented and interpreted with particular reference to field service conditions. As additional improvements in coolants are developed to meet new performance demands, the advantages of full scale engine testing should be increasingly appreciated as a highly discriminating accelerated test tool.
