Functional requirements of automotive engine coolant and established methods of evaluating antifreeze performance characteristics are reviewed; engine-dynamometer test procedure providing improved discernment of coolant performance; data presented and interpreted with reference to field service conditions; ability of engine test to indicate realistically service durability of coolant within reasonable test period makes technique valuable for developing antifreezes for increased performance requirements.
