The feasibility of V/STOL aircraft has been generally established, but military applications are not clear. The advantages and disadvantages of V/STOL aircraft are discussed and problem areas needing more investigation are highlighted. The latter include downwash and ground erosion, engine reingestion of engine exhaust and debris, and noise reduction. The advantages include reduction of runway length, reduced real estate requirements, slow landing speeds which reduce accidents. Some possible Navy applications are mentioned: marine assault, resupply of combat forces, ASW, search and rescue, medical evacuation.
