V/STOL transports encompass wide range both in size and configuration varying from one-man stand on VTOL to extremely large vehicles which can carry many people; possible configurations are depicted on graph, prepared by McDonnell-Douglas Corp; problem areas considered include downwash and ground erosion, engine reingestion of engine exhaust and debris, and noise reduction; advantages include reduction of runway length, reduced real estate requirements, and slow landing speeds which reduce accidents; some possible Navy applications are marine assault, resupply of combat forces, ASW, search and rescue, and medical evacuation.
