Jane Goodperson is a lead Design Engineer for the State DOT who is assigned a minor safety project. The project on a high volume freeway was triggered by a wet weather monitoring process which noted a number of run off the road crashes at a particular horizontal curve during wet conditions. The horizontal curve was a large radius curve located at the end of a long downhill profile as the freeway was exiting the mountains. The freeway had been constructed with a normal crown set in the median of the freeway. During design of the project, Jane discovered, upon completion of the new super-elevated pavement, a recently constructed railroad bridge would have a non-standard clearance under the structure. She felt she would be personally responsible for any crashes that might occur if the project did not comply with structural clearance design guidelines.
