Following several years of intense interest and increasing adoption of separated bike lanes by US cities, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) released a comprehensive Planning and Design Guide in May 2015. This article explains the significance of the Guide, its relation to existing guidance, and how ITE members can apply it in their work. In May of 2015, FHWA released the Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide (the Guide). The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Fast Lane blog notes that "these lanes are an important tool communities across the US can use to build safe, comfortable, and connected networks of bicycle infrastructure that meet the needs of people of all ages and abilities. This article introduces the Guide to a wider audience of transportation practitioners, describes how it interacts with and builds upon existing design guidance, and offers examples of challenges and solutions in SBL planning and design that are covered in the Guide, supported by real-world examples and lessons learned.
