In member-driven professional societies such as the Institute of Transportation Engineers, volunteers develop and organize many of the organization's activities, often through committees, councils, and task forces. Therefore, if you are interested in guiding a professional society's activities, you must find ways to contribute to these committees, councils, and task forces.
