In member-driven professional societies such as the Institute of Transportation Engineers, volunteers develop and organize many of the organization's activities, often through committees, councils, and task forces. Therefore, if you are interested in guiding a professional society's activities, you must find ways to contribute to these committees, councils, and task forces. Here are three tips to increase your involvement: 1. Show up. 2. Ask questions. 3. Do what you can. The committee does not need you to know everything; they just need your help. Regardless of your particular skills, they can benefit a committee and are something that committee chairs are seeking. Therefore, show up, ask questions, and do what you can.
