Simple design for fixture and specimen significantly improves crack-growth fracture testing of ceramics and other brittle materials. Makes it possible to impose crack-mouth-opening displacement that remains at or close to prescribed value even when crack extends. Important secondary advantages: geometry of specimen is simple, making specimen easy to machine; fit between pin and specimen provides self-aligning grip; contact stresses and probability of failure at or near loading spot reduced.
