The present invention relates to a brittle crack arrest method for ships. The brittle crack arrest method includes: a step of forming a weld by welding ultra-thick plates; and a step of machining the weld to prevent brittle cracks from propagating to the ultra-thick plates or changing a direction of propagation of brittle cracks. The weld produced due to welding of ultra-thick plates can be locally heat-treated or peened to cause discontinuity in the material, thereby preventing brittle cracks from propagating along the weld or changing the direction of propagation of brittle cracks. The method reduces maintenance cost, and is applicable to ultra-thick plates.

    본 발명은 선박용 취성균열 정지방법에 관한 것으로서, 극후판을 용접하여 용접부를 형성하는 용접부 형성단계; 및 상기 극후판의 용접부에 취성균열이 전달되는 것을 방지 또는 전달방향을 변경할 수 있도록 가공하는 용접부 가공단계;를 포함하여 이루어질 수 있다. 본 발명에 따르면, 극후판을 용접하여 형성된 용접부를 국부적인 열처리 또는 피닝하여 재료적 불연속이 형성되도록 함으로써 취성균열이 용접부를 따라 전파하지 않고 정지되거나 균열진행 방향을 변경할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 유지보수 비용을 절감할 수 있고 두꺼운 극후판에도 적용할 수 있는 효과가 있다.
