The implications of certain recent developments in the theory and observations of quasi-parallel interplanetary and cometary bow shocks and of the earth's foreshock are reviewed. Special consideration is given to issues affecting the relationship between the broad foreshocks and thin subshocks expected and observed in quasi-parallel shocks. Some important three-dimensional effects are emphasized, which theory and computer simulations have difficulty taking into account.
