Abstract We review the implications of certain recent developments in the theory and observations of quasi-parallel interplanetary and cometary bowshocks and of the earth's foreshock. We concentrate on issues affecting the relationship between the broad foreshocks and thin subshocks expected and observed in quasi-parallel shocks. We emphasize some important three-dimensional effects which theory and computer simulations have difficulty taking into account.
