Environmental and ship performance data were collected aboard the USCGC POLAR STAR in April 1980 as part of a multi-year program to make an operational assessment of the feasibility of a year-round transportation system serving northwestern Alaska. Volume I contains a description of program objectives, planned deployment, and the data collection program. A description of all data collected and the subsequent analysis is given for level ice and the forty profiled pressure ridges.
