Problem areas and required technological R&D for maintenance activities for European space missions are identified and the interest of in-orbit maintenance is shown. Analysis of in-orbit maintenance is used to derive concepts of maintainable or refuelable spacecraft, as well as of freighter and/or tanker servicers. Changes in satellite design to provide maintainability, and design guidelines for maintenance satellites are outlined. Unmanned maintenance operations are discussed. Design concepts for rendezvous and docking subsystems, maintenance manipulator systems, interfaces, and tools are suggested. Maintenance of a telecommunication satellite in geostationary orbit is considered.
