The report compares the relative performance of helicopters and landing craft in amphibious assault operations, based on the results of a number of detailed simulations of amphibious operations, using various combinations of ships, helicopters, landing craft and operating modes in the mid-range time period (to 1985). Two different forces were used in the analysis--one a Marine Amphibious Force (MAF) including all its usual heavy vehicles and equipment, and the other a specially devised helicopter-liftable force (HLF) of lower strength and lighter equipment. A description of the GAMUT model is included. (Author)
