Measurements were made of the wayside noise and ground vibration levels generated during the passby of high-speed Metroliner and Turbotrains operating on the tracks of the Penn Central Railroad. The Metroliner in operation on the New York-to-Washington line was measured in Plainsboro, New Jersey. The Turbotrain in operation on the Boston-to-New York line was measured in West Mansfield, MA. In addition, freight trains and conventional passenger trains were measured and recorded. The report contains tabulations of the passby noise and vibration levels measured, time history level recordings and 1/3-octave frequency analyses of representative passby data.
