This report presents current views of the genesis, structure and properties of lunar soils based on astronomical and radiophysical studies of the Moon. Lunar research from orbital spacecraft is discussed, and techniques and equipment employed to investigate lunar soils in soft-landed lunar stations are described in detail. A separate section is devoted to examinations of the first lunar rock samples brought to Earth in 1969.
