The French Echocardiograph Experiment (FEE) and the French Posture Experiment (FPE) are Orbiter middeck payloads, sponsored by the Life Sciences Division of this office, that will fly on STS 51-G as part of a cooperative program with France. The objectives of these particular experiments are to obtain on-orbit data regarding the response to weightlessness of the cardiovascular and sensorimotor systems. The FEE system was previously flown on a Soviet Salyut mission in July 1982. These experiments accompany, and will be performed by, the French Payload Specialist Patrick Baudry with participation fran other crew members including the Arabsat Payload Specialist. The flight of M. Baudry is the result of an invitation by President Reagan to French President Mitterrand in March 1984. The FEE and FPE experiments are an initial element of a cooperative effort with France with the potential for jointly developing a second-generation echocardiograph instrument among other proposed life sciences collaborative experiments. The enclosed Mission operation Report provides additional information about these experiments. General information regarding the STS 51-G flight is contained in the STS 51-G Prelaunch Flight Operation Report No. M-989-51-G.
